Chiffon Magnifique - Post-Punk Prophet (Documentary/Concert Film)

Happy New Year! Last year was a great year for many reasons. One of those reasons was that I discovered Chiffon Magnifique.

Who is Chiffon Magnique, you might ask?

Chiffon Magnifique is a bewitching musical act that delves into the realms of post-punk, minimal wave, and goth rock, crafting a unique sonic experience. With a penchant for exploring themes of pain, death, sex and leather, Australian musician and producer Jed A. Walters weaves haunting melodies and introspective lyrics into a tapestry of raw emotion. - Spotify

To kick off 2025 Brisbane/Gold Coast artist Chiffon Magnifique has released a self-funded documentary, Post-Punk Prophet.

Directed by Orville Weston, Post-Punk Prophet, a 33-minute concert film/documentary shot by Ryan White, follows Jed A. Walters' life as a goth musician in Southport, Australia. Jed delivers a raw live performance at Vinnies Dive Bar (featuring 4 whole songs), shows off his home studios somewhere on the GC, and laments on the struggle of growing up a goth in the most un-goth city in Australia. Along the way, he shows us how he creates a Magnifique track, gushes over his synths and musical collaborators, hosts us on a tour through his beloved hometown of Southport, and vouches for the importance of creating community and preserving sounds for future generations.

Brisbane's gothic music culture is tragically under-documented, and it can make it seem like quite a lonely place for goths. It's exciting to see Jed's growing presence in the gothic music scene here, with lots of gigs popping up and the release of Post-Punk Prophet.

I particularly enjoyed seeing Jed talk about Chiffon Magnifique's recording process, as well as a short synth demo. I hope you enjoy it too.

Please consider supporting Chiffon Magnifique's music by making a contribution here.

Schkeuditzer Kreuz @ The Cave Inn, Brisbane

Chiffon Magnifique and Schkeuditzer Kreuz played The Cave Inn this weekend in Brisbane as part of Attrition's AU tour. I recently discovered Chiffon Magnifique through 4ZZZ's Dark Essence, and they've been a regular on my playlist ever since so I was stoked to see a local show pop up.

The Cave Inn is a nice little spot on the Southside of Brisbane. Chiffon Magnifique played an incredible set and I especially enjoyed being able to see Abomination, Cyanide and Witches Falls live. Discovering local Brisbane music like this has been amazing, and I'll be keeping an eye out for subsequent shows.

Schkeuditzer Kreuz (NSW) was an absolute assault in the best way possible and was reminiscent of Author & Punisher, who I saw back in early 2020 when they opened for Tool.

All in all, a great way to round off the weekend!

Attrition (UK) Australia & New Zealand Tour @ The Cave Inn, Brisbane (2 November 2024)

ATTRITION (UK) live at The Cave Inn, w/ SCHKEUDITZER KREUZ (NSW), CHIFFON MAGNIFIQUE (QLD), SUBTERRANEA (Canada) + FAITH DJs RICHARD & JOSH

I have driven past The Cave Inn in Brisbane many times and for some reason, I have always assumed it is a rock climbing gym. The logo screams rock climbing gym. Mmm, chalk. No thank you.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that it is, in fact, a music venue and according to Google, PIZZA RESTAURANT and (probably) a venue absent of chalk. Oh, hello.

Even more surprisingly, this unassuming venue masquerading as a rock climbing gym is hosting a very nice (probably) non-chalky line-up of post-punk, goth, industrial and other acts on 2 November.

Happy Halloween, and happy 1 month birthday to the Brisbane Gothic blog!

Arguably, it is the most wonderful time of the year - Brisbane's weather is delightful and there are many lovely events on this weekend too. One is the screening of the silent film Nosferatu from 1922 at Palace Cinemas. I have not yet seen this film, so I'm looking forward to this screening in preparation for the release of the new Nosferatu film in the New Year.

Organ Recital @ Brisbane City Hall, Brisbane (29 October 2024)

If you've ever had the opportunity to see an organ recital at Brisbane City Hall, you know how incredible the sound is.

It's been a while since I've been to a City Hall organ recital and for quite a time there weren't any of these events on while renovations were underway. I kept checking back every so often, but there was sadly nothing on for years.

Excited would be an understatement when describing how I felt to see that this Tuesday 29th October 2024 at 12pm, theatre organist, composer, and silent film accompanist David Bailey will perform a series of songs as part of Organ Sounds That Go Bump In The Night.

Clairy Laurence Ceramic Skull Workshop @ Paddington, Brisbane (6 October 2024)

On 6th of October, I attended a workshop facilitated by Clairy Laurence, a Brisbane ceramicist. I was joined by a couple of good friends, one much more practised in pottery and ceramic art than myself.

The workshop was run out of Clairy's breezy studio in Paddington Brisbane and was limited to eight attendees. This specific day was dedicated to creating a ceramic skull. We spent the first half of the workshop building the foundation for the skull before pausing for morning tea and coffee. I really loved the mugs, they were so cute!

I decided to try my hand at creating a ceramic frog, which was a challenge. Many of the attendees adorned their ceramic skulls with ceramic flowers and insects. As I was finishing my little frog it was around lunchtime and we strolled down the street to a nearby cafĂ© for lunch.

After returning from lunch Clairy provided a demonstration on how to best glaze the skulls. We spent the afternoon completing this. I went for a minimal look to let the natural clay show through and I am looking forward to seeing how the finished piece looks.

Clairy runs a variety of events in Brisbane and you can book through her website clairylaurence.com.
