I have driven past The Cave Inn in Brisbane many times and for some reason, I have always assumed it is a rock climbing gym. The logo screams rock climbing gym. Mmm, chalk. No thank you.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that it is, in fact, a music venue and according to Google, PIZZA RESTAURANT and (probably) a venue absent of chalk. Oh, hello.

Even more surprisingly, this unassuming venue masquerading as a rock climbing gym is hosting a very nice (probably) non-chalky line-up of post-punk, goth, industrial and other acts on 2 November.

Formed in 1980 in Coventry, England, ATTRITION are about to embark on their first ever tour to Australia in October-November 2024, and are excited to appear in Brisbane at THE CAVE INN on Saturday 2 November.

Arguably, it is the most wonderful time of the year - Brisbane's weather is delightful and there are many lovely events on this weekend too. One is the screening of the silent film Nosferatu from 1922 at Palace Cinemas. I have not yet seen this film, so I'm looking forward to this screening in preparation for the release of the new Nosferatu film in the New Year.

Organ Recital @ Brisbane City Hall, Brisbane (29 October 2024)

If you've ever had the opportunity to see an organ recital at Brisbane City Hall, you know how incredible the sound is.

It's been a while since I've been to a City Hall organ recital and for quite a time there weren't any of these events on while renovations were underway. I kept checking back every so often, but there was sadly nothing on for years.

Excited would be an understatement when describing how I felt to see that this Tuesday 29th October 2024 at 12pm, theatre organist, composer, and silent film accompanist David Bailey will perform a series of songs as part of Organ Sounds That Go Bump In The Night.

Description: David Bailey is an Australian theatre organist, composer and silent film accompanist based in Brisbane with a musical style influenced heavily by the popular music of the early to mid-twentieth century. A theatre organist firstly, David’s main form of musical expression has always been connected to the silent film world, but in 2007 he brought this expertise back to the cinema and pursued an interest in silent film accompaniment. Be taken on a historical journey of black-and-white films with a haunted theme, including Phantom of the Opera, Jekyll and Hyde, and Nightmare Before Christmas plus many more. Supported by marvellous singers, you will escape to another time and place where things go bump in the night. Clairy Laurence Ceramic Skull Workshop @ Paddington, Brisbane (6 October 2024)

On 6th of October, I attended a workshop facilitated by Clairy Laurence, a Brisbane ceramicist. I was joined by a couple of good friends, one much more practised in pottery and ceramic art than myself. 

The workshop was run out of Clairy's breezy studio in Paddington Brisbane and was limited to eight attendees. This specific day was dedicated to creating a ceramic skull. We spent the first half of the workshop building the foundation for the skull before pausing for morning tea and coffee. I really loved the mugs, they were so cute!

I decided to try my hand at creating a ceramic frog, which was a challenge. Many of the attendees adorned their ceramic skulls with ceramic flowers and insects. As I was finishing my little frog it was around lunchtime and we strolled down the street to a nearby café for lunch.

After returning from lunch Clairy provided a demonstration on how to best glaze the skulls. We spent the afternoon completing this. I went for a minimal look to let the natural clay show through and I am looking forward to seeing how the finished piece looks.

Nosferatu - In Australian Cinemas 1 January 2025

The new Nosferatu film looks amazing and will be released in cinemas in Australia on 1 January 2025, although I've also seen 31 December 2024 mentioned.

If you haven't seen it, you may like to watch the 1922 original, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, and Bela Lugosi in Dracula from 1931 beforehand.

Candlelight: A Haunted Evening of Halloween Classics @ Brisbane (31 October & 1 November 2024)

St John's Cathedral in Brisbane City is a beautiful church built using Gothic Revival architecture. This Halloween, the church will host a string quartet performing candlelight concerts for Candlelight: A Haunted Evening of Halloween Classics. 

There are three sessions on Thursday 31st October and Friday 1st November.

This will be my first candlelight event, but I have already purchased my tickets! Halloween is my favourite time of year and it's great to see it celebrated more in Australia.
